Congratulations to P. V Sindhu for cracking into top five players in world badminton ranking. As per latest ranking released on Wednesday, she toppled Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi to take her spot at number 5. She constantly kept her performance improving after stunning world’s top players in 2016 Olympics and conquering silver meadal in the process. It was P.V Sindhu very first Olympics appearance. By all regards she had given her best performance in all the matches including finals and was able to upset the world no. 2 and world no. 6 during her road to finals. In finals, she stuck against a wall who in my view is like Virat Kohli and Novak Djokovic of badminton. But still P.V Sindhu did not let it go just like that, she kept Carolina busy and kept fighting back until the end. What a match it was!!! and it’s not new everybody knows Sindhu is a Giant Killer and on her day she can get past anyone. Especially if she is made to play against any top order player.
Now with Sania Nehwal recovering completely after her prolonged injury which she aggravated during her Olympics second round match, it would be interesting to see how these two girls keep world badminton stage rocking with their performances. Having two Indians in top 10 rankings of world badminton is such an honor especially when Sindhu is already playing her best badminton of her life and Saina is eager to roar back and triumph world stage again with her all round game and experience. In between Sindhu and Saina at this point of time, Sindhu might be leading the race but you just cannot rule out Saina I am very much hopeful that she still has good two to three years of badminton left in her. Two competing at any stage is just a treat to watch and in recently concluded Premier Badminton League tournament Sindhu was able to get over Saina easily. Whatever the case is we as an audience are in a win-win situation.
To conclude Indian badminton is shaping up very nicely all praises should not be limited only to Saina and Sindhu but to their coaches and international level facilities built by them. Now if you look at Indian badminton circuit you will find the number of players competing at top level. Just to give an idea Saina, Sindhu, Srikant, Kashyap, Pranoy, Sai Parineet, Ajay Jayaram, Ashwini Ponnapa, Jwala Gutta, Manu Attri, Sameer Verma, Sourabh Verma and latest sensation Lakshya Sen and believe me list is never ending. Such a satisfying feeling it is as a sports lover and a proud Indian the way badminton has transformed is just sensational. Moreover, in my view, a case study should be done on transformation journey of Indian badminton and best practices should be applied to different sports played in the country. A bunch of kudos and praises should go to the gurus like Gopichand, Vimal and the legend Prakash Padukone who have given their sweat and blood to bring about this transformation in Indian badminton. Surely we will be seeing more heights in this sport in near future…!!!
