Every Indian by now might be knowing who Phogat sisters are if not all of them then at least Geeta and Babita who were in lead roles in recently released Dangal movie. Dangal is a great movie and by far one of the best sports movie that Bollywood has ever produced. This movie has done loads of good to not only Phogat sisters but to whole wrestling fraternity. Hopefully, Bollywood will come up with more such sports based films. To see India on the world map of sports all such initiatives are very encouraging and welcoming.

Coming back to “Phogat Sisters”: They are in all 6 sisters, four are daughters of Mahaveer Singh Phogat and 2 are daughters of Rajpal Singh Phogat brother of Mahaveer. All six were trained under Mahaveer Singh Phogat. Well most of us might be knowing about Geeta and Babita because of recent media coverage and film itself. I think these two have got greater media coverage than what “Sakshi Malik” got who bagged bronze medal in recently completed Rio Olympics. Let’s talk about other four supremely talented grapplers from Phogat Clan.

Vinesh is right now India’s most talented wrestler and was a real gold medal hope in Rio Olympics. In Rio Olympics she got BYE in her first round and in the second round she trashed Romanian wrestler 11-0. However in Quarterfinals when Vinesh was 1-0 up against Chinese wrestler she suffered a serious knee injury which closed her Olympics campaign. She has won Gold in 2014 commonwealth games and Silver in 2014 Asian games. In her recent interview, she has claimed that she will be soon back in mats and she is aiming no less than a gold medal in 2020 Tokyo Olympics games.

Ritu competes in 48 kg category same as her cousin Vinesh. For the second time in a row, she has won the Gold medal in National Wrestling championship. At the International level, she has claimed Silver and Bronze medal in world Junior wrestling championship and she is has bagged gold in Junior Asian championships. She was part of winning wrestling team “Revanta Mumbai Garuda” in India’s first Pro Wrestling League.

Priyanka competes in the 53kg category. In 2015 national seniors wrestling championships she has claimed gold medal whereas Babita had to settle down with a Bronze medal in the same event. She was part of CDR Punjab Royals in Pro Wrestling League season 1.

Sangita competes in 53 kg category she has won medals at age-level international championships. She is representing Delhi team in Pro Wrestling League season 2. It would be interesting to see her competing against her sister Babita in PWL2, she will be representing team Uttar Pradesh.
